Very tall soccer players attract a lot of assumptions. Some are rooted in how the game used to be played, and some were never true to begin with. The 2026 rankings of the ten tallest active professionals offer a good chance to check them against real names and numbers.

Myth 1: The tallest players are always big target forwards

This used to be closer to the truth. Six of the ten tallest retired players were forwards, including Peter Crouch at 6'7.1" (2.01 m) and Jan Koller at 6'7.5" (2.02 m).

Today, it's a different story. Among the ten tallest active players, only one is a striker: England's Kyle Hudlin at 6'9" (2.06 m). Seven are goalkeepers, and two are center-backs. As tactical styles have shifted, the classic tall target man has become rarer, while goalkeepers still gain a direct advantage from every extra inch.

Myth 2: Very tall players can't handle mobile roles

Height usually comes with trade-offs in quickness, which is why most outfield positions favor a lower center of gravity. But the 2026 list includes exceptions. France's Isaak Touré, at 6'9" (2.06 m), combines his size with recovery pace and is the tallest center-back playing regularly in Europe's top five leagues. England's Dan Burn, at 6'7.1" (2.01 m), can play left-back and drive forward with the ball, something few defenders his size can do.

Myth 3: The giants of the past were taller than today's players

Not according to the numbers. In a combined all-time ranking of active and retired players, active players fill six of the top eight spots. Belarusian goalkeeper Konstantin Veretynskiy, at 6'10.7" (2.10 m), shares first place with retired Danish goalkeeper Simon Bloch Jørgensen.

One caveat: databases record modern players far more consistently than players from earlier decades, so comparisons across eras are approximate.

Myth 4: Playing soccer makes you taller

This one comes up often, especially from parents of young players. Adult height is determined mostly by genetics. What soccer does is decide where tall players end up. Clubs and academies spot unusually tall teenagers early and steer them toward goalkeeper and center-back, where reach matters most. The height comes first, and the position follows.

The bottom line

Today's tallest players look different from the giants of the past. They're mostly goalkeepers, often young, and in a few cases surprisingly mobile. Six of the ten are 25 or younger, led by the 20-year-old Veretynskiy.
